Teeth whitening services

Anyone can recommend reliable, safe, but relatively cheap teeth whitening services?

I had called up my dentist's office, but they charge like $600 for laser whitening (they also have a take-home bleaching method which was about $30 more, but I was like *crap*). Also, I'm not sure how white is white, how much it hurts (I'm told gums and teeth are very sensitive afterwards), so would love any tips and thoughts.

::EDIT:: Sorry, I meant $600 (as in six hundred)! Has been corrected.
