What do dentists do with the candy they buy?

Candy Corn and ChocolateIt seems like there’s a dentist in every community who offers to buy candy from trick-or-treaters in order to prevent Halloween-induced cavities. I’ve always wondered what the dentists do with the hundreds of pounds worth of candy they get — after all, they can’t exactly eat it all themselves. (I, of course, could plow through 200 pounds of Halloween candy in a couple of weeks, but I don’t have a perfect-toothed reputation to uphold.)

Michael Gavin of Onalaska, Wisconsin, pays $2 for every pound of candy and sends all the candy he collects to his brother, who is stationed in Iraq. The soldiers then distribute the candy to the children they meet.

Orthodontist Jon Golub of New Jersey gives 10 wooden nickels for every pound of candy a kid brings in. He also gives wooden nickels throughout the year to reward kids who brush well and who arrive on time for their appointments. The wooden nickels are redeemable for prizes like CDs and GameBoys. He donates the Halloween candy he buys to the residents of the Veterans Home in Paramus, who, presumably, have less teeth to be damaged than your average 10-year-old.
